Katrina / Rita Project
A shuttered department store, turned shelter, in a week.
After hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Rackspace mobilised to house evacuees in San Antonio — most memorably converting an empty Montgomery Ward store into a functioning shelter.
The Denver Post covered it at the time under the headline "Home is sweet, even if it's a Ward store." It remains the clearest example of the company's operating instinct applied to something other than servers.
